Sourcing Cosmetics From China: How to Vet a Manufacturer

How to source private label cosmetics from China: choosing a region, checking the factory, sampling, quality control, shipping and payment terms.

Why brands source cosmetics from China

China has deep supply chains for raw materials, packaging and filling in the same cities, which keeps development fast and costs competitive. Guangzhou, especially Baiyun District, is one of the largest cosmetics manufacturing hubs, with packaging and ingredient suppliers close by.

Check the factory, not just the price

  • Ask for the business license and cosmetic production license.
  • Request certificate copies such as GMP or ISO 22716.
  • Ask for a video call or factory video showing production and the lab.
  • Confirm whether they manufacture in-house or outsource your category.

Sample properly

Test samples in the climate of your target market and in the final packaging if possible. Keep an approved "golden sample" from the factory and one with you, so mass production can be compared against it.

Quality control and documents

  • Agree on inspection points: incoming materials, in-process checks and final inspection.
  • Request a COA for each batch and keep retained samples.
  • Use a third-party inspection before shipment for large orders.

Shipping and payment

Agree the Incoterm (EXW, FOB or CIF, for example) so you know who handles freight and export. A deposit before production with the balance before shipment is common; protect larger orders with clear written specifications and, where available, trade assurance on B2B platforms.
