OEM vs ODM vs Private Label in Cosmetics: Which Fits Your Brand?

What OEM, ODM and private label mean in cosmetics manufacturing, how they differ in cost, speed and ownership, and how to choose.

OEM: your formula, our production

In cosmetics, OEM means the manufacturer produces a product to a formula or specification you provide. You keep full control of the formula; the factory supplies production capacity, sourcing and quality control.

ODM: our formula, your brand

ODM manufacturers have tested formula libraries. You choose a base and customise texture, scent, actives and packaging. It's the fastest route to market and usually the lowest development cost.

Private label: the umbrella term

Private label (or white label) describes selling a manufacturer-made product under your own brand. Most private label skincare is produced through an ODM route, sometimes with custom formulation layered on top.

How to choose

  • Have a proven formula already? → OEM.
  • Need to launch quickly on a budget? → ODM / private label.
  • Want a truly unique product? → Custom formulation with the manufacturer's lab.
