Where buyers find manufacturers
- B2B marketplaces such as Alibaba.com, where you can compare many factories quickly.
- Trade shows such as Cosmoprof and in-cosmetics, where you can meet teams in person.
- Search engines, using specific terms like "private label serum manufacturer" rather than "skincare".
- Referrals from packaging suppliers, formulators and other founders.
Shortlist by category first
A factory that already makes your product type will move faster and price more accurately. Ask to see their existing range in your category — a catalog, sample kit or photos of current production — before discussing your custom ideas.
Questions to ask every manufacturer
- Which certifications does the factory hold (for example GMP or ISO 22716), and can you share copies?
- What is the MOQ per SKU with stock packaging, and with custom packaging?
- How many sample rounds are included, and how long does each take?
- Who owns the formula if you develop a custom one?
- Which documents come with an order: COA, MSDS, INCI list, stability data?
- How are reorders handled so the product stays consistent?
Red flags
- No samples before a deposit for mass production.
- Vague answers about certifications or refusal to share copies.
- A price far below every other quote without a clear reason.
- Slow or inconsistent communication during the quoting stage.
Make the first conversation count
Send a short brief: product type, target market, claims, reference products, packaging preference and estimated quantity. A clear brief gets you comparable quotes and shows which manufacturers really understand your project.
